Frank's Galena Weekend - Day 2
A popular club event (in its 7th year) put together by cross-country rider Frank Hassler. Enjoy three days of riding through the beautiful Galena Territories and surrounding areas. Past rides have included sections in Southern Wisconsin and Eastern Iowa. The ride distance varies; typically 40-60 miles daily. Be prepared for some hill climbing! (2,000 - 4,500 feet of elevation). Use this event as an incentive towards completing your season’s training goals. Overnight accommodations are the rider’s responsibility. Ride Friday, Saturday, or all three days.
Per Frank: "On Saturday we will meet at the Galena Recreational Park on Field St. at 8:00 am to start our ride to Shullsburg, WI. On the way we will pass through Scales Mound. There is a grocery store if you need to restock. If we are making good time we will make a loop through WI farmland. If not we will save it for after lunch. Shullsburg is a quaint small town in WI with a Main Street time has forgotten and a cheese factory. Also there is a mining museum that will take you back to when lead was king. We will eat lunch at one of two downtown restaurants. Then we head back to Scales Mound and a creative bike ride through northern IL to Galena. We will all take a break and clean up for dinner. I vote for Mexican just around the corner from the brewery. The ride will have some sharp climbs but most climbs are gradual and long. The the downhills are the same. I tried to include more single lane black tops which have ups and downs and sweeping curves. After lunch in Shullsburg a faster group may break away. I will stay with the less fast as this is a no-drop ride. There is so much beautiful scenery to enjoy."
